Start with readiness, not the birthday
Package ages are a safety and marketing starting point, not a complete picture of readiness. Notice whether the child is still mouthing objects, how steadily they sit or stand, whether they can release an object intentionally and how long they stay with a simple action. A good record separates the stated age from our editorial age-fit observations.
Look for simple cause and effect
Posting, nesting, rolling, pulling and opening make the result of an action easy to see. At this age, a toy that does one understandable thing can offer more meaningful repetition than lights and sounds triggered by many unrelated buttons.
Check the everyday friction
Can the toy be cleaned? Are pieces large enough? Does it tip during use? Is it painfully loud? Can a caregiver reset it in seconds? These practical details often determine whether a toy becomes part of daily play or disappears into storage.
